My recent experience: This past week, I took my 16 year old son to a national men’s clothing retailer to be fitted for a tuxedo rental. Upon entering the store and telling the sales person what we were interested in, she explained that she hadn’t been trained for that, and she would get her manager to help us. When she returned, she informed me the manager was on a conference call, and “could we come back?”
As a retailer who understands the value of a paying customer standing in front of me, I was a bit taken aback. So what did we do? We left, and we didn’t come back. We went to a competitor (across town and out of the way, by the way) and made the purchase. Also, I sent a note to their Website’s customer service area alerting them to the experience we’d had. I knew I’d never purchase anything there again – too, it made an indelible impression on my son as well, and he’d likely never buy there either.
Now, they are a large company. They could have easily written this off as no big deal. However, yesterday my phone rang with a number I didn’t recognize. And guess what – it was a regional vice president from this company following up with me. He apologized, explained that this should never have happened, and we proceeded to have a great chat about business and customer service.
And you know what? He turned me from an angry customer who would have been happy to warn people about dealing with them, to one now who’ll promote them as a great customer focused organization. I ended up wowed.
